Comparison Summary
There is no single merger clock. A complete comparison separates transaction close, the NMB single-transportation-system determination, the start of joint bargaining, agreement, ratification and implementation. It also distinguishes a full JCBA from a limited bridge agreement.
| Integration | Measured interval | Elapsed time | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska + Hawaiian | Merger close to 2026.09.14 | 726 days | JCBA ongoing |
| Alaska + Hawaiian | NMB single-system finding to 2026.09.14 | 557 days | JCBA ongoing |
| Alaska + Hawaiian | First JCBA session to 2026.09.14 | 545 days | No ratified JCBA |
| Continental + United | Merger close to JCBA ratification | 2,142 days | Ratified 2016.08.12 |
| Continental + United | NMB single-system finding to ratification | 1,960 days | Ratified 2016.08.12 |
| Continental + United | Agreement reached to ratification | 49 days | Member-approved JCBA |
| Republic + Mesa | Merger transition agreement to JCBA agreement | 53 days | Limited bridge JCBA |
| Republic + Mesa | Merger transition agreement to ratification | 95 days | Ratified 2026.01.22 |
| Republic + Mesa | Merger close to ratification | 58 days | Ratified 2026.01.22 |
Alaska + Hawaiian: The Live Clock
The transaction closed on 2024.09.18, the NMB found a single Flight Attendant transportation system on 2025.03.06, and the JNC opened bargaining on 2025.03.18. As of this baseline, the JNC bargaining clock stood at 545 days with no ratified JCBA.
CWA-AFA told members in July 2025 that finalizing the JCBA could take 2+ years. That is a union estimate, not a fixed deadline. CrewSignal will compare the estimate with actual bargaining cadence, tentative sections, economic movement and implementation progress.
Continental + United: The Long Full-JCBA Path
The merger closed on 2010.10.01. The NMB found a single transportation system for Flight Attendants on 2011.04.01. The parties announced a joint agreement on 2016.06.24, and members ratified it on 2016.08.12.
That produced a 2,142-day close-to-ratification interval and a 1,960-day NMB-to-ratification interval. Ratification also did not equal instantaneous operational integration; implementation remained a separate process.
Republic + Mesa: A Fast but Limited Bridge
CWA-AFA and IBT Local 135 entered a merger transition agreement on 2025.10.19. The transaction closed on 2025.11.25. The parties reached a JCBA on 2025.12.11, and Flight Attendants ratified it on 2026.01.22.
The 95-day transition-agreement-to-ratification interval was exceptionally short, but it is not directly comparable with a complete Alaska + Hawaiian or Continental + United bargain. The Republic agreement was used as the base, the expedited bargain was limited to specified subjects, and the unions preserved the right to begin full contract negotiations in January 2027.
What United Flight Attendants Should Watch
- Scope of the bargain: A fast limited bridge and a full JCBA are not equivalent achievements.
- Bargaining cadence: Count sessions, but also measure tentative sections, economic exchanges and unresolved high-value provisions.
- Ratification versus implementation: A signed agreement matters only if the merged operation can implement scheduling, seniority, pay and work rules promptly and accurately.
- Institutional performance: Compare whether multi-carrier resources shorten the process and protect the stronger provisions from each pre-merger agreement.
At 545 days, the Alaska + Hawaiian bargaining clock is about 28 percent of Continental + United’s 1,960-day NMB-to-ratification interval. It is already about 5.7 times Republic + Mesa’s 95-day transition-agreement-to-ratification interval. Those figures create a transparent benchmark; they do not predetermine whether Alaska + Hawaiian is moving appropriately.
Methodology and Limits
CrewSignal reports each milestone separately and does not convert unlike bargaining structures into one ranking. The comparison will be updated when Alaska + Hawaiian reaches additional verified milestones.
