Status Summary
Alaska Airlines announced on August 20 that it had placed Seattle–Athens and Seattle–Paris service on sale for May 2027. The company identified the Alaska-branded Boeing 787-9 as the aircraft for both routes and described the additions as part of a broader Seattle intercontinental expansion. The announcement increased the significance of the unresolved Flight Attendant staffing and service-model dispute already affecting Alaska-branded Dreamliner flying.
An independent report published August 21 said CWA-AFA and Alaska met on August 20 concerning the grievance filed for pre-merger Hawaiian Flight Attendants working Alaska-branded Boeing 787-9 flights from Seattle. The report said approximately 400 Hawaiian Flight Attendants were based in Seattle and described the union’s position that the legacy Hawaiian agreement required mutual agreement on service requirements. CWA-AFA sought either additional staffing or a reduction in inflight offerings. No public grievance outcome was identified by the end of the reporting week.
A pre-merger Hawaiian Reserve Committee update published August 19 documented a concrete internal-union integration step. Reserve representatives from the two legacy groups had compared their contracts and reserve operations, and the committee said a member survey would precede joint negotiations over the reserve section of the JCBA. The update did not announce tentative language, an integrated reserve system, or implementation of common work rules.
CrewSignal identified no new exact-week JCBA agreement, integrated-seniority-list implementation milestone, NMB Flight Attendant representation action, or additional single-operating-certificate development. The next publicly announced joint-negotiations session was scheduled for August 25–27.
Integration Dashboard
- Alaska announced two additional Seattle intercontinental routes using Alaska-branded Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
- The route announcement expanded the operational context surrounding the unresolved Dreamliner staffing and service-model grievance.
- CWA-AFA and Alaska met during the reporting week concerning the grievance filed for pre-merger Hawaiian Flight Attendants working Alaska-branded long-haul flights.
- The grievance remained a legacy Hawaiian contract-enforcement matter rather than a dispute under a fully implemented combined-carrier JCBA.
- No public resolution, staffing adjustment, service reduction, or contractual disposition was identified by August 21.
- Pre-merger Alaska and pre-merger Hawaiian reserve representatives had begun comparing their contracts and reserve operations in preparation for joint bargaining.
- The announced reserve survey represented member-input preparation rather than a tentative agreement or common reserve system.
- The NMB has already found a single transportation system for the combined Flight Attendants craft or class and certified CWA-AFA as the combined representative.
- Same-union continuity avoided a contested representation election but did not by itself create common staffing, workload, reserve, scheduling, benefit, base, or seniority protections.
- No new exact-week public JCBA or integrated-seniority-list implementation milestone was identified.
CrewSignal Watch Points
- Watch the Dreamliner grievance for a settlement, additional staffing, revised inflight standards, escalation, or a published contractual disposition.
- Does same-union continuity provide sufficiently rapid and enforceable protection when network expansion advances before a common agreement is fully implemented?
- Watch the August 25–27 bargaining session for movement on reserve, training, insurance benefits, seniority, domiciles, and other remaining JCBA subjects.
- Watch whether the reserve survey produces transparent member input, proposed common language, and clearly explained protections for both legacy groups.
- Watch whether staffing models, service standards, training, and work assignment for Alaska-branded long-haul flying are negotiated before additional Boeing 787-9 routes enter operation.
- Watch for publication and implementation of the integrated seniority list and for clear explanations of its effects on bidding, bases, training, and aircraft assignments.
